This is what contains the ideal maternity suitcase according to a midwife

Big question before giving birth on maternity leave: what do you bring in your suitcase? A midwife gives you good advice.

Between the suitcase for the delivery room, the bag for the newborn and his personal suitcase: you can easily get lost. But thanks to Élise, a brilliant midwife who shares a lot of advice on her Instagram account, you’ll be able to see things more clearly!

The maternity suitcase: choosing the essential

When you leave to give birth on a maternity leave, you know more or less what to do by looking on parenting sites or by asking directly the nursing staff of the hospital where you intend to give birth.

But overall it is still the same thing, and Élise, better known by the nickname @ la.sage.femme on Instagram, had the good idea of showing on video what you can bring on board.

But we remind you: this video only concerns the suitcase of the person who gives birth for his stay in the maternity ward, not that of the unborn child or the practical handbag that finds its place in the birth room.

According to Elise, an ideal maternity suitcase contains (non-exhaustive list):

  • Your toiletries, with your home shower-smelling soap, toothpaste, a toothbrush, and I’ll even add a nail file (always on hand so you don’t scratch the baby). You can put everything in a nice vanity, that of Bliss for example, which we have already told you about in our article on the best boxes for maternity.
  • Absorbents, these large liners the size of an ocean liner used to collect lochi. Maternity can provide some, but you can find more comfortable to wear such as from Fava. You can also opt for period panties like those offered by Moodz, but you’ll need a good package, that’s predictable logistics.
  • Cotton panties that you don’t like very much (because they could get stained) but which are very comfortable and do not tighten the tummy. Or disposable briefs / panties, which you can find at the supermarket or at Mamacita (or they can also be provided by your maternity ward, you can ask for them in advance)
  • A shower mat, to keep your feet dry in the hospital bathroom, as there are usually none
  • A shower towel is more practical for drying and you can choose a very soft one (and one that will smell good in your laundry, we seek comfort everywhere)
  • Loose and comfortable clothes, possibly opening in front if you want to breastfeed
  • Flip flops, to walk the corridors of the maternity ward after childbirth, without getting your feet dirty (slippers are not recommended, since in the diaper rooms there are 67 degrees, and that you often have to squirm a little to put them on, which is not always easy afterwards childbirth)
  • Compression stockings, ’cause this is life, that shit (yeah, I swear to you, that’s great)
  • A night light, to avoid feeding your newborn under the neon lights of the bastards in the bedroom
  • A hot water bottle, to calm the pain and tension of the trenches, or postpartum contractions
  • A power strip to connect a phone charger, night light, etc. Often there is only one outlet in the room next to you and besides it is high which is not very practical.
  • of the comfort foodsuch as candy, granola bars, chocolate, Pom’Pote, a sausage or other, everyone has their own tastes
  • Comforting tea bags
  • A pen, to note the times of the feedings / bottle, the state of the diaper of the precious (yes, you have to write down at what time you changed it, if it was pee or poop, everything else, to be sure that everything transit and its bladder work well)
  • Masks against Covid, because this whole mess is not over yet
  • A nursing pillow (even if you’re not breastfeeding, it’s great for back support) and / or your own comfy pillow
  • A towel to relieve the leavening of the milk with the hot and cold technique
  • Anything that can help cheer you up, relieve you, is good for you. Personally, it was too much chocolate, clementines and the last one here.

And you, what are your tips? What would you have wanted to bring in your suitcase?
