La Nuit du 12: finally a thriller that asks the right questions about femicides

More than an excellent criminal investigation, La Nuit du 12 is a radically feminist film that deserves your full attention. Currently in the cinema.

Released in theaters this Wednesday 13 July, The night of 12 is a fantastic movie, a breathless investigation and especially, a feminist work of radicalism as rare as it is necessary.

We explain to you because not to be missed, without spoilers.

The night of the 12th: an investigation that will surprise you

In The night of 12, a femicide is committed. A group of men of the judicial police are conducting the investigation to try to unravel the mystery of the death of the young Clara. The subsequent interrogations, suspicions abound but the doubts by Yohan, the cop most involved in the case, continues to grow.

The film is directed by Dominik Moll, a director to whom we owe the famous Harry, a friend who wishes you well And Only Beasts, a feature film as unique as it is compelling. The night of 12 is adapted from 18.3 – one year at the PJa book by Pauline Guéna in which the author recounts a year of immersion in the judicial police services of Versailles.

Women die while men commit crimes and solve them

At first glance, the scenario of The night of 12 seems to tick all the boxes of classic thrillers. However, the more the film goes on, the more we understand that tells us something we don’t usually see in the cinema or in other media. A feeling of discomfort of a particular kind settles in us, to the point of make us rethink everything we are seeing under a new one very unexpected prospect… And radically feminist.

Forget those French detective films whose only stake is exhibit sordid crimes And praise the merits of an irreproachable police force. These films in which women oscillate between two possible roles: or are represented as shadows that remain out of scope of the family home. Or they are victims anonymous and interchangeablearound which the investigations are linked. The night of 12 perfectly reproduces all these codes of the genre, so as to better question their nature deeply male chauvinist.

Above all, the film does not show the charm of police officers or, even worse, for the killer. On the contrary. The real discovery of this investigation, it is the omnipresence of male violence. These violence of which women are victims, and in which all men shine, one way or another. To start with those who commit femicides … but not only.
