California Governor Gavin Newsom, who has long been a target for conservative activists, decided to leap into the lions’ den and join Donald Trump-owned Truth Social yesterday. Newsom took to Twitter this afternoon to write, “I just signed up for Trump’s Truth Social. Being there to expose the republican lies. It can get … interesting.
His first post on Truth Social featured a video in which he said he was “destroying the murder problem of the American Red State.” The caption of the post reads: “Here is the truth …”
Newsom also posted the video on Twitter. In it, he states that “eight are among the ten countries with the highest murder rate”.
And he continues: “So the question is simple: what laws and policies lead to such a massacre?”
The post received around 650 likes and 250 shares in the last 24 hours.
For reference, below is a CDC map of the states with the highest age-related murder rates.
Newsom has long denied having national political ambitions, but the Golden State leader often points out the difference between California and the country’s two other most populous states, Texas and Florida, which have governors.
Florida Governor Ron Desantis is, of course, often mentioned as the next Republican presidential candidate. In contrast to DeSantis and other Republican leaders, including Truth Social, Newsom may seem like a natural national choice to oppose them.
At a minimum, Truth Social’s crowd is where Newsom doesn’t get regular audiences. Moving his message to the platform will definitely give a note to him and his message.
