September Strikes: User Manual for parents (dates, reception, solutions)

On 10 and 18 September they promise to be complicated days for French families. Between schools, croccari, canteens and disturbed transport, many parents will have to juggle between professional and unexpected obligations linked to strikes. Here are the essential information to be organized without too much stress.

Two days of national mobilization

On Tuesday 10 September it will take place “blocks all” transmitted outside the traditional trade union structures, where any citizen is invited to demonstrate, block, boycott the 2026 budget of François Bayrou.

Wednesday 18 September, are the unions ask for a day of strike and events.

These dates may concern in particular the national education sector. Several unions replied: South Education, SNES-FSU (for secondary federations) and Schipp-Fsu (for primary). The Syndicale Lycéenne (USL) union also calls to block the factories.

The transport networks will work in slow motion, even more complicating school or home work trips.

Reception in schools and minimum service

In kindergarten and primary, the law requires a minimum reception service (SMA) When over 25 % of teachers are on strike. This system is organized by the Town Hall, but does not guarantee normal management conditions: reception is often limited to children’s surveillance in a room, without educational activities. Depending on the municipalities, the number of places can also be limited, forcing some parents to find an alternative.

In colleges and high schools, there is no minimum service : The courses can be deleted exclusively and simply if too many teachers or supervisors are absent. Families must therefore remain attentive to the communications of the factories in the previous days.

CANINS, Nursery and ExtraCurricular Asyi: no automation

The ailments do not stop in the classrooms. The canteens, extracurricular receptions and even some municipal nurseries can close or operate in a reduced workforce. Once again, the decisions are made locally from each town hall. To avoid unpleasant surprises, it is advisable to consult the information published on the Municipality website or to contact the interested services directly.

The right to be absent for the care of children

The law recognizes parents the right to be absent from their work to maintain a child when the school is closed and no care solution is available. The absence must be reported to the employer as soon as possible.

In principle, it is not remuneratedUnless the collective agreement or a corporate agreement provides for the salary maintenance. The telework can also be provided, provided that the position allows it and the employer provides his agreement.

Anticipate to limit difficulties

In this context, the key is the anticipation. Parents can:

  • Now informed with the school and the town hall on the planned organization;
  • Provide a plan B a loved one, a neighbor or a babysitter;
  • Ask for a day of telelatvores or programs.

Some companies adopt a flexible attitude towards these situations, aware that the employees concerned do not always have an alternative.

A return to school

These two days of strike remember how vulnerable families are vulnerable to social movements in public services. Among the school closures, the messes of the deleted canteen and canceled trains, each parent will have to juggle a crisis logistics. A puzzle that, without preparation, can quickly turn the nightmare.
