“Someone in the area robbed a liquor store and stole a woman’s purse. Police said one of the suspects was Hispanic, and I fit that description. They laid me face down on the hood of the car. I laughed nervously, realizing how dangerous a situation I was in the patrol car. “I could be behind bars for a crime I didn’t commit,” Malek recalls.
