From rebel to zoomers’ main style icon: How has Charli XCX’s style changed?

The main musical hero of last year was certainly rightfully the brave Briton Charli XCX. For those who forgot everything during the New Year holidays, let’s remind: on June 7, the singer released her sixth studio album, codenamed Brat, which literally translates as “tomboy” or “tramp”, and started a global trend with coloring. Summer 2024 in neon colors.

Young people all over the world changed into ultra-short shorts, ripped tights and tight tops, began to intensely paint their eyes black, made accent wings and stopped being afraid of smeared mascara and sloppy makeup. And it’s all a Charli XCX effect.

Meanwhile, the singer is far from new to the music industry. Charlie’s first hit appeared more than 10 years ago. A lot has changed during this time: global fashion trends, music trends and Charli XCX’s own style. Today we propose to talk about the latter in a little more detail. We tell you how the singer’s style has changed.

2013–2015

Charli XCX’s music career began to develop rapidly in the early 2010s. The singer subsequently signed a contract with Atlantic Records, released her first hit “I Love It” and opened for Coldplay. And in 2014, together with Iggy Azalea, she recorded a super successful movie called Fancy, which all Tumblr girls of that era definitely remember. As for the style, it is worth noting that the spirit of hooliganism was felt even then. Charli In general, it was difficult not to notice him.

In the middle of the decade, the singer’s style remained almost unchanged. On the red carpet of the awards and at the concert venues, he appeared in metallic suits, acidic dresses, deliberately classic suits, complemented by ironic details (for example, a pink bow tie). In the 2010s, Charli XCX became a great example for all followers of the Indie Sleaze trend.

2016–2019

In 2016, a completely new chapter begins in Charli’s musical career – followed by the release of the experimental album Vroom Vroom, produced by Scottish pop futurist Sophie. Even though the album was never a hit, Charli XCX still calls it one of her favorites. Currently, the singer’s style is also changing. Sequined young bomber jackets are being replaced by sexy dresses, and coarse platform boots are being replaced by high heels and sandals.

The period from 2016 to 2019 can be called the most feminine period in the career of the British singer. Who would have thought that rebellious Charlie would wear flowing dresses and corset minis, cut her bangs and straighten her hair? Yet Charli XCX’s career had it all.

2020–2023

However, the era of femininity, elegant dresses and neat hairstyles did not last long. Already in 2020, fans are seeing more changes. The British singer is increasingly opting for dramatic black, accent accessories and gothic elements.

There is absolutely nothing classic in her look on the red carpet – if there is a long skirt, then a very short top, if there is a dress, then there is a sexy bow with a transparent back and corset, then there is always a rebellious hairstyle. The brat moments were felt even then.

2024

Charli XCX’s style in 2024 is a very harmonious blend of late 2010s femininity and 2020s gothic rebellion. The singer still wears revealing sheer things, but she doesn’t look provocative. Now Charlie is 32 years old and it is worth noting how smoothly the development of his style has gone. If in the case of Miley Cyrus and other stars of the generation changes occurred very sharply and suddenly, Charlie always remained true to herself. That’s what makes it so interesting to watch. That’s what we’ll be doing in the new year, by the way.
