Investigators are sounding the alarm. They say there is a one in six chance of a major volcanic eruption on Earth this century and that “humanity has no plan to solve this problem.”
Climatology professor Markus Stoffel said such an event could cause “climate chaos” similar to the eruption of Mount Tambora in Indonesia in 1815. The disaster led to a sharp drop in global temperatures. As a result, crops failed, famine broke out, diseases emerged, and tens of thousands of people died.
Unlike the “year without a summer” that followed Tambora’s eruption, the megavolcano of the 21st century will worsen the problems already caused by humanity’s dependence on fossil fuels. Scientists say the consequences could be much worse than in 1815. Ironically, greenhouse gases released into the atmosphere in the last century could further reduce the Earth’s temperature, writes the Daily Mail.
Volcanologist Thomas Aubrey’s research shows that a hotter, more turbulent atmosphere will emit sulfur dioxide and the cooling aerosols it produces more quickly, increasing the cooling effect. Dr. According to Aubrey, climate change may even affect the behavior of volcanoes. Melting and disappearing glaciers above underground magma reservoirs could relieve the pressure holding it in place, he noted.
Heavier rainfall caused by climate change can also lead to “steam bomb”-like explosions as moisture seeps deep into fissures near both active and extinct volcanoes.
