Scientists divided dog owners into three types

Dogs are often called “man’s best friend,” but new research suggests some owners may want to rethink that nickname for their pets. Researchers from Eötvös Loránd University surveyed 800 dog owners and found that they all fell into three different categories.

“Although we collected data from online groups about dogs in the home, it is interesting that the owners differ,” the study’s lead author, Laura Gillett, was quoted as saying by the Daily Mail.

Nearly 800 dog owners were asked questions about their relationships with their pets, what they like about their pets and the role they play in their lives. The results showed that almost all participants truly enjoyed the physical contact with their dog (97.6%), the “unconditional love” their dog gave them (93.7%), and the appearance and beauty of their dog (88.4%).

As a result, scientists have identified three types of dog owners:

Friendly colleague (31.1%)

Dog owners who fall into the “friendly co-worker” category tend to view their pets as colleagues and protectors, but they also feel a strong emotional bond. Common breeds to own are Border Collies, Belgian Shepherds or German Shepherds.

Dog parent (49.5%)

Owners act as parents for the pet. They have close human ties with their younger friends, but they do not see practical functions in them. Typically has Boxers or Dachshunds.

Companion (19.4%)

“Companion” dogs keep dogs primarily for companionship, but maintain emotional distance. Commonly owned dogs are Mudi, English Cocker Spaniel or Labrador Retriever.
