Following the death of One Direction singer Liam Payne, more than 65,000 people have signed a petition to pass Liam’s Law. Measures are needed to protect the mental health of artists.
The Daily Mail writes that the proposed legislation would require regular mental health screenings and the presence of mental health professionals while artists are working, as well as ongoing support for musicians throughout their careers.
The petition, started anonymously on Change.org by a fan named Day KV on October 18, read: “The entertainment industry must be responsible for the well-being of its artists. As a result, problems such as stress, anxiety, depression, substance abuse and even suicide are alarmingly high. “Research shows that artists are 2-3 times more likely to suffer from these problems than the general population.”
Recall that the former One Direction star fell from the third floor of a hotel in Buenos Aires, the capital of Argentina, last Wednesday night. Hours later, The Daily Mail reported that Liam had been fired from the record company.
