Customers of a number of large retail chains in Moscow began to complain about poisoning marshmallows with the addition of maltitol. Hundreds of people experienced diarrhea, nausea, bloating and abdominal pain after eating dessert. The product has been withdrawn from sale. Mash reported that Rospotrebnadzor inspected the Sokol factory in Dmitrov near Moscow, where this product is produced.

We contacted nutritionist Alexey Kabanov to find out the beneficial and harmful properties of maltitol and its differences from sugar. It turns out that maltitol is made from potato or corn starch and has a low calorie content and glycemic index. The consumption rate of this sweetener is not more than 90 grams per day.

“Maltitol partially replaces sugar, so it should not be consumed in large amounts. There is still a risk of high blood sugar levels in people with diabetes. It negatively affects the digestive organs and has a laxative effect. They cannot be poisoned. However, if you are prone to obesity and diabetes, then you should not consume maltitol. “It is suitable for people who do sports, do not have any health problems, and want to reduce their sugar intake,” shared the nutritionist.
Alexey Kabanov also noted the beneficial properties of maltitol: “The use of sweeteners reduces the risk of cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, stroke, obesity and caries.”
We’ve talked before about whether essential oils can replace pills.
