It became clear what saved the TV series “Office” from failure

Director Paul Feig said that it was Steve Carell who saved the popular series “The Office” from failure. According to him, when he was offered to develop an American version of the series, he refused, stating that the original was a cult show.

At the same time, Feig stated that Carell’s performance in the first season was very close to the character of obnoxious boss Ricky Gervase. “This is British humour. British humor is very different. British people love to get angry at rude people. “They like it when the main character is unlikable,” Deadline quotes the director as saying.

He explained that American audiences are different, so if they don’t like a person, they should turn off the television. Feig eventually directed an episode of The Office’s second season, “Office Olympics,” and noted that the episode came shortly after Carell’s stellar performance in 2005’s The 40-Year-Old Virgin. According to Paul, Steve suddenly became a megastar, and the writers of The Office believed that the show had not been working for a long time and was not showing results in the ratings.

In one scene, Steve begins to worry because he’s had a terrible day. At one point the hero starts to cry. According to Feig, this was the moment when the team realized there was a human side to the character: “And everyone realized he wasn’t an asshole. He was a delusional idiot trying to be funny.” The director noted that from that moment on the show became a real hit.
