The artist added that the moment with the piano was not in the script. The idea of making such a scene came spontaneously. On the set, the director of Pretty Woman asked Richard what he did after working at the hotel.
“I said, ‘I’ll stay up all night, find a piano and play.’ He said, ‘Let’s do something about it.’ We were just improvising, and he suggested, ‘Play something dark.’ I just started playing something dark that was the inner life of this character.” The Hollywood Reporter quoted the actor as saying:
