On the occasion of the 1000th anniversary of Suzdal, the folk opera “This is Suzdal” was staged under the artistic direction of Andrei Boltenko, director of the Opening Ceremony of the 2014 Winter Olympics. Dima Bilan, Mia Boyka and other stars of the Russian stage performed at the event. We tell you how it happened.
It would not be an exaggeration to call the main axis of the performance a folk opera inspired by the thousand-year history of the ancient Russian city and its distinguished inhabitants. In the center of the performance is an old Russian singer and storyteller, played on stage by Alexey Rozin (“The Master and Margarita”, “Without Love”). The author of the text was Evgeniy Vodolazkin.
By the way, a soundtrack was written specifically for the show, combining motifs of Russian folk music with elements of the film-symphonic tradition. An orchestra was created for the project, consisting of both folk instrument performers and symphony orchestra musicians. There was everything on stage: folklore and academic vocalists, as well as pop artists.
But when it came to the script decision, Golden Mask winner Zinovy Margolin worked together with costume designer Alena Amadulinna.
Using 3D graphics, viewers were able to immerse themselves in real historical Suzdal with the atmosphere of all eras. Alexander Sivaev was responsible for creating the “magic” of this scene. The organizers were the team of the Vladimir-Suzdal Museum-Reserve and the Red Square media group.
