Bridgerton: This detail from the latest episode could finally mark the arrival of a lesbian love story

The recently concluded third season of Bridgerton followed the love story of Colin Bridgerton and Penelope Featherington. If the subject of the next season has not been officially announced, a clue has not escaped the viewers of the series…

This article contains spoilers for Bridgerton season 3 and the contents of the book.

For three seasons, The Bridgerton Chronicles, delights fans hungry for romance and drama. The latest flurry of episodes, revealed between May and June, followed the union of Penelope Featherington and Colin Bridgerton, linked since childhood by a deep friendship. But as usual the series could not focus on just one couple, and so it was in the background that another Bridgerton made its social debut, elected diamond of the season by the Queen. Spectators were able to follow the loves of the shy Francesca (played by Hannah Dodds), who ended up finding her “match” in the discreet person of the Earl of Kilmartin (Victor Alli). And this, despite the doubts of the matriarch Lady Violet Bridgerton…

Finally a lesbian romance in Bridgerton?

If it has not yet been announced which characters will be at the center of the fourth season, a clue has not escaped the attentive eyes of those who have read Julia Quinn’s novels.

In fact, in one of the last scenes of the last episode of the third season, the young Francesca announces to her husband, with whom she will live in Scotland, that her sister Éloïse will leave Mayfair with them to follow them on their adventure. And it was at this time that Lord Kilmartin introduced his young wife to his cousin, Michaela Stirling, who will also be on the trip. Francesca seems upset and loses her words.

This new character is not banal. In the books, Michaela Stirling is actually Michael Stirling, cousin of Lord Kilmartin, who Francesca falls in love with and eventually marries after the sudden death of her first husband. Does the introduction of Michaela in Michael's place mark the introduction of a lesbian romance for the next season of Bridgerton?

The series has often been singled out for its very heteronormative focus. The stories we follow are almost all passionate heterosexual love stories between extraordinarily beautiful characters. The final season seems to herald a welcome paradigm shift. In particular, it laid the groundwork for a possible introspection for Benedict Bridgerton, the second of the brothers, who discovers his attraction to men during threesomes, initiated by his lover, Tilley Arnold. Will the fourth season of Bridgerton be an opportunity to open up new queer love stories? We hope so…
