Housekeeping: 5 tips that circulate (too much) online and are false

Social media is full of all kinds of cleaning tips, but some are actually ineffective, according to one specialist.

On TikTok and Instagram, cleaning videos are all the rage. Useful and even fascinating (even satisfying), some of them highlight cleaning tips that are supposed to break efficiency records. But some aren’t effective at all, according to cleaning specialist Bruno Ginesty, aka [email protected], on Instagram. He is also the author of the book Family and you in Marabout. In a video that generated 649,000 views, he listed these tips that don’t work at all. A quick overview.

These cleaning hacks are just… a waste of time

  • Put salt on a red wine stain
Big mistake: it will set the color… Alternatives: use beef bile soap or Marseille soap, both work very well.
  • Mix white vinegar and baking soda
This is a really useless mixture. Use black soap instead, it is one of the 3 essential cleaning products to have at home. Dilute one cap in four litres, and you can clean everything, but be careful to rinse well.

  • Mix baking soda and lemon
This mixture is often used to unclog the sink or stovetop. But for Bruno Ginesty it is really too tiring. The specialist recommends using a white stone for cleaning. The cooking space is spotless in seconds.

Clean the windows with newspapers...
Why make it complicated when it can be simple? For windows you can simply use the essential Marseille soap or household alcohol.

Mix more than 2 products to clean the shower wall
Another waste of time and with no proven effectiveness. The white stone works miracles. In summary, these are simple, effective and eco-friendly tips.

What Bruno Ginesty doesn't say is that some advice, especially seen under the hashtag #cleantok, can also be dangerous. These include: cleaning the toaster with water or blocking the toilet and filling it with lots of products.
