This is certainly not the reaction the International Olympic Committee was hoping for when the Berluti house revealed the uniforms of the French athletes for the opening ceremony of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
What will the Berluti outfit that will dress the French athletes for the Paris 2024 Olympics be like?

On 17 April 2024 Berluti (owned by the LVMH group which wants to put its “ knowing how to make people dream » for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games) described the behind the scenes of the creation:
“Stand out at the start of the Games.
Berluti, a French Maison founded in Paris in 1895, and LVMH are proud to present the outfits that will be worn by the French team during the Opening Ceremonies of the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
The ceremonial dress par excellence, the tuxedo designed and cut specifically for the occasion in cold midnight blue wool. The jacket features a shawl collar embellished with a “French flag” motif in shades of blue and red, whose shaded and smoky effects recall the patina of the leathers, emblematic know-how of the Maison.
The women’s sleeveless jacket is an interpretation of the female tuxedo and therefore maintains a light line with pronounced shoulders. Women can choose between woven trousers or a silk wrap skirt.
Under the jacket the French athletes will wear a very light white shirt made of a blend of cotton and silk.
They will wear the iconic Shadow sneakers or Lorenzo loafers, in versions specially adapted for the occasion. Finally, to perfect the outfit down to the smallest detail, the Maison appealed to the circular economy and developed pocket squares and scarves created from fabric scraps. »
It is therefore a precise choice on the part of the Berluti house reveal the arms of the athletes to create “ a light line » for the opening ceremony of the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games But this decision surprises, amuses and/or anguishes.
Why no sleeves on the tuxedo or women’s shirt for the opening ceremony of the Olympics?
On its institutional website, LVMH insists and signs specifying that the shirt offered to women will also be sleeveless:
“A fundamental piece of athletes’ outfits, the jacket in question is available in the sleeveless version for women.
To accompany it, the French athletes will wear a white shirt (with sleeves for men, sleeveless for women) made of a cotton and silk blend. »

Incidentally, it should be noted that the LVMH website also specifies the country of production of these outfits:
“ Created in France and produced in Italy, in the laboratories where the Maison’s collections are traditionally made, the clothes are made with fabrics exclusively from Europe. »
Why don’t female athletes have sleeves on their tuxedos for the Olympic opening ceremony?
If for female athletes the choice between skirt and trousers is the least they can do, we can in fact question the imposition of vests. Especially because the opening ceremony of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games will take place in the middle of summer, which promises to be scorching. Men could also benefit from a sleeveless tuxedo. This could have modernized the silhouette, as well as ventilated the bodies, and presented everyone’s muscles on an equal footing. But no, only women have to show that much skin. Is sexism to blame?
In any case, this is Twitter’s most obvious and favorite hypothesis, so the reactions are as funny as they are relevant:
Either we are less prudent or it’s the patriarchy’s fault 🤷🏻♀️ https://t.co/nVwzXAihWk

Why does it seem like female athletes were punished and stripped of their sleeves? https://t.co/byDjSVxUc5

“I thought it was a sporting event. Not a display of femininity”
Tweets multiply to express the same main idea: women seem deprived of their sleeves. As if it were a punishment. Or the female duty to show a minimum of skin to avoid being confused with men, and to please men male gauze passing. An imposed demonstration of femininity, even in sport. As if they had to be less and less covered than these gentlemen.
The girls’ costume will be sleeveless “to lighten the silhouette and make it more feminine”
Man, I thought it was a sports competition. Not a demonstration of femininity. https://t.co/TIj2De6JIb— AuPalais (@palais_au) April 17, 2024

In short, if it will be hot for everyone during the Paris 2024 Olympics ceremony, the French athletes will at least have the advantage that this concern for” light line » by Berluti will bring them some freshness. Side benefits of sexism?
