The all-time finish at the Indianapolis 500 showed the Red Flag stopping the race with just four laps from the last, leading Sweden’s Marcus Erickson to finish the sprint with a late attack win.
A final lap warning against full-throttle crowds was issued at the first Indy 500 Indianapolis Motor Speedway after 2019, but Erickson was already in command.
“I was praying there were no more yellow flags,” Erickson said after the win. “But I can’t believe it. “I’m so happy.” Erickson joins 1999 winner Kenny Brack, becoming the second Swedish driver to win the Indianapolis 500.
Erickson took control of the race Sunday night and controlled Chip Ganassi Racing, until teammate Jimmy Johnson crashed four laps causing a rare red flag stop at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
This created a dynamic finish. The stance gave the cars behind them time to strategize on how to overtake Ericsson. The race resumed two laps later and he managed to secure the victory. This is team owner Chip Ganas’ fifth Indy 500 win.
IMS owner Roger Penske (father of PMC Chairman and CEO Jay Penske) acquired IMS in early 2020. The pandemic lasted until August of the same year, without fans in the stands. The race in 2021 continued on the usual Memorial Day weekend, but there was limited capacity for fans.
Before the race, Roger Penske wrote a letter that was posted on social media.
