Alcohol consumption among women is on the rise, according to a new study

According to a new study by Public Health France, the phenomenon of “occasional heavy drinking” is on the rise among women.

If the French consume less and less alcohol, women’s consumption increases, according to the latest study by Public Health France published on Tuesday 23 January.

According to data for the year 2021, long-term trends reveal “ a very marked decline in declared daily consumption in recent decades ”, which is reflected in the sales figures.

“Excessive alcohol consumption by singles” is on the rise.

The report, in fact, documents the increase in “ occasionally drinking excessively “, OR drink more than six drinks in one evening. And 23% of women say they have experienced at least one during the year, compared to 21.4% in 2017. While 8.6% say they experience one per month, compared to 7.6% in 2017.

Several hypotheses are mentioned to justify this increase: “ In general, major social developments, such as the increase in the percentage of women participating in the labor market, the decrease in the age of first marriage and the age of first child » details Public Health France.

But the study body also cites the case of women” evolving in male environments, particularly in advantaged socio-economic environments, they may have a tendency to adapt to the consumption behaviors of these environments, to conform to certain informal codes or even to use alcohol as a form of self-medication to combat perceived fatigue » he explains in the study.

The French are still heavy consumers of alcohol

Overall, alcohol consumption in France is declining, particularly weekly, by 62.6% in 2000 and 39% in 2021. While the percentage of adults consuming alcohol every day was almost divided by threegoing from 21.5% in 2000 to 8% in 2021.

Another surprising fact: according to the survey, the relationship with alcohol is now different depending on age. While young people aged 18 to 34 drink less often, when they do, they drink more excessively than people aged 65 to 75. Concretely, the former consume on average 3.2 glasses per day and have 64.3 days of consumption per year, while the latter consume 1.6 glasses, 123.7 days per year.

Nonetheless, the French remain heavy consumers, the share of adults who consume it every week, equal to 39%, has remained stable since 2017. Alcohol consumption is also responsible for approximately 41,000 deaths per year and is one of the main risk factors for premature death, recalls the health agency.
