British couple aged 84 and 78 die in house fire near Benidorm

An elderly British couple have died in a house fire in a Spanish seaside resort near Benidorm.

Firefighters and other rescue workers rushed to the scene of the crash after being alerted by a neighbor of the property in the Costa Blanca seaside resort of Denia.

But they could do nothing to save the couple’s lives and they were pronounced dead at the scene after their bodies were found inside.

The local victims are a British couple aged 84 and 78 from Great Britain.

The Spanish National Police is conducting an ongoing investigation into the fire.

Sources said the interior of the building was already gutted and the fire may have started a few days ago

Although officials have not yet confirmed the cause of the fire, it is believed to have started by accident.

Local reports suggest it may have been caused by a cigarette butt that was not properly extinguished.

The alarm was raised just before 11:00 this morning, but well-informed sources said they found the interior of the property already destroyed and believe the fire may have started several days ago.

The neighbor who raised the alarm apparently told emergency services that she did not see any flames, but was concerned because the inside of the windows had turned black.
