Sarah Huckabee Sanders Wins GOP Nomination for Arkansas Governor

Sarah Huckabee Sanders, once a spokesperson for the Trump administration, is expected to win the Republican primary in the next race for Arkansas governor, a position her father held from 1996 to 2007. The Associated Press announced the first race for Sanders tonight.

Huckabee Sanders took the podium at the White House briefing with Sean Spicer in July 2017 and almost immediately established himself as a fierce supporter of Trump and his policies. His actions were marked by occasional bad clashes with the White House press corps, known as CNN’s Jim Acosta, and accusations from Democrats that he was spreading lies.

Trump announced his departure in a thank-you tweet in 2019, saying: “I hope you decide to run for Governor of Arkansas; it would be amazing”. Sarah, thanks for the good work!”

A few months later he made his debut as a Fox News writer on Fox & Friends.

Announcing his candidacy for governor in January 2021, he said, “As governor, I will defend our right to be free from socialism and tyranny, your right to a second amendment, your family, your freedom of speech and religion. Our state needs a leader who has the courage to do what is right, not what is politically correct or fit for purpose.

Sanders won’t be the first White House press secretary to run for the job. Appointed to a vacant seat in the US Senate in 1964 after serving as press secretary to John F. Kennedy and Lyndon Johnson, Pierre Salinger lost the election for a full term the same year.

In November, he will meet Arkansas Democratic primary winner and Libertarian candidate Ricky Dale Harrington.
