Oscar-winning actress Lupita Nyong’o was announced earlier this week as jury president for the upcoming 77th Berlin Film Festival, which takes place from February 15 to 25 in the German capital.
Ahead of her Berlinale tour, Nyong’o is behind Sudan’s Oscar submission for Best International Film Goodbye Juliawho comes on board as executive producer.

The film takes place in Khartoum, on the eve of the 2011 partition between Sudan’s southern and northern populations. Goodbye Julia revolves around a middle-class northerner trying to make amends for her role in murdering southerners by hiring his penniless widow without revealing her motive.
The two get closer, but then the truth comes to light.
The film was shot in Sudan amid growing political instability following a military coup in October 2021 that has since turned into a civil war between two rival generals and forced millions of people to flee their homes.
Goodbye Julia As the first Sudanese film to be included in the official selection, it made history at Cannes and had its world premiere at Un Certain Regard, where it won the Freedom Prize.
Nyong’o, who released the film as an EP upon completion, selects three key scenes which Kordofani then walks her through, explaining how he put the film together and her intentions for a question-and-answer session to the prices.
“It is a great honor for us to have you in this film and maybe you will come to the set for our next film,” says Kordofani at the end of the conversation.
