Sexual violence in Iran: Amnesty International warns against law enforcement practices

In a report published on Wednesday 6 December, the organization highlights the use of sexual violence by the Iranian authorities to “suppress the uprising” that swept through the country following the death in custody of Mahsa Amini.

In September 2022, Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old Iranian Kurd, was arrested in Tehran by the morality police. Her police accuse her of violating the Islamic Republic’s dress code because her veil did not completely cover her hair. Her death in custody a few days later caused a wave of revolt in the country, carried forward by the movement “Woman, life, freedom”. A wave of resistance bloodily repressed by the regime in power, which does not hesitate to use force to stifle the courage of activists.

According to information from Amnesty, “ the perpetrators of these rapes and other forms of sexual violence are members of the Pasdaran (revolutionary guards), the Bassidj paramilitary forces and the Ministry of Intelligence “.
