For Annie Ernaux, the GPA is not against feminism

The writer explains in the pages of “Têtu” how her vision of surrogate motherhood has evolved, a topic that divides feminist circles. In the past she had opposed it, annoyed by the commercial aspect, but today she believes that “surrogacy is a real choice on the part of the surrogate woman”.

“I was against the average, I evolved”writer and Nobel Prize winner for literature Annie Ernaux explains to the magazine Stubborn, in the latest issue on newsstands this Wednesday 29 November. The author, whose voice is widely heard, says she followed the journey of a couple close to her, which changed her perspective on GPA. However, you ask that the financial aspect be strictly controlled by the State that authorizes it.

Against GPA due to “business aspect”

I was against surrogacy, due to the black point of the commercial aspect, with the consequences that it implies, that is, women who need money and who resort to it to live. The body, particularly that of women, is already the object not only of trafficking, but also of wear and tear at work. » explains the writer Stubborn. But it was seeing a couple of men around him use it that allowed him to reconsider his preconceptions: “ I was able to see how it happened and understand that carrying someone else’s child is a real choice on the part of the surrogate mother.. »

Like our colleagues at Huffpost, the evolution of Annie Ernaux’s point of view reflects that of society as a whole. According to a study conducted by Stubborn and Ifop, 75% of respondents said they were in favor of legalizing surrogacy for heterosexual (75%) or homosexual (59%) couples in 2022, compared to 60% and 41% respectively in 2014.

The GPA is not against feminist values

The writer believes that the GPA, which divides feminist circles, is not incompatible with feminism” to the extent that it reaffirms that women are free to dispose of their bodies”. As long as the State that authorizes it adequately regulates the economic aspect, being free “hardly possible”.

According to the author, French law is “purely based on morality”and despite a change in mentality, our society is still clinging to a form of “divination of motherhood”. An obsolete reflex, according to Annie Ernaux: “ We know well, for example, that adopted children are not unhappy. But we are moving towards more individual freedom, it is evident, and I believe it is a matter of years: year after year, the GPA will make its way. »
