The Minister of Culture wants Arcom to regulate Frenchie Shore, but it’s impossible

Frenchie Shore is the subject of considerable concern, raising concerns about its distribution and accessibility to minors via social media. While the Minister of Culture, Rima Abdul-Malak, declares that Arcom can regulate this broadcast “bordering on pornography”, the reality is much more complex and reveals the limited impact of this institution.

The reality show will be released on November 11th Frenchie Shore has circulated a lot of ink, raising concerns at the highest levels of the state, in particular the Minister of Culture, Rima Abdul-Malak.

Frenchie Shore depends… on Czech and German legislation

In an interview for The Parisian published on November 20, the latter considered that the broadcast was al “the limit of pornography”expressing concern about the broadcasting excerpts from the show on TikTok, Twitter or Instagramalso accessible to children under 16 for whom the program is prohibited.

The minister then stated that Arcom [l’autorité de régulation de l’audiovisuel et du numérique] was competent to regulate such contents, in particular on platforms, pursuant to art protection of minors. And yet: according to a survey conducted by Franceinfo, this statement is actually incorrect. In fact, “Frenchie Shore” is broadcast on MTV France and on the Paramount+ platform. However, contrary to what the name of the first platform seems to indicate, MTV France is based there Czech Republicwhile the second is in Germany, thus escaping French legislation.

Arcom can act against misinformation, but not against sexual content online

The only option for Arcom is to contact its counterparts in these countries to ask them to analyze the reality show that claims to be ” garbage “. Roch-Olivier Maistre, president of Arcom, asked for an evaluation of “Frenchie Shore” with respect to the law applicable in these countries, highlighting the multiple reactions aroused in France by reality shows, concerning respect for human dignity and protection of minors.

Likewise, Arcom cannot regulate the dissemination of sexual images on social networks. While it can take action against online hate and misinformation on platforms like Facebook, Instagram and TikTok, its control extends only to these specific aspects. It remains to be seen whether, faced with these limitations, Rima Abdul-Malak will want to entrust more power to Arcom…
