This November 25th, like every year, it is held International day to end violence against women. As told by our colleagues at The breaking wave, who compiled the major marches and events on a detailed map, this date is not trivial. It honors the Mirabal sisters, three Dominican activists, killed by dictator Rafael Turjillo on November 25, 1960.
The establishment of this International Day dates back to 19 October 1999, during the 54th session of the United Nations General Assembly where “Representatives of the Dominican Republic and 74 member states presented a draft resolution to proclaim November 25 as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women”according to the Ministry of Culture.
