Recently, the towel skirt, the new product of the French fashion house Balenciaga, has been constantly discussed on the internet. The brand presented such a product in its new spring collection. The so-called skirt, which mimicked a towel wrapped around the hips, immediately went viral and inspired memes. Users do not understand how such a household item, which is in everyone’s home, can become a real part of the wardrobe and, secondly, cost 81 thousand rubles ($925).
There are tons of videos on TikTok replicating the looks from Balenciaga’s lookbook with their own lounge towels, and I have to say, they look just as good (but not better). Available in three color options: beige, gray and black, the towel can be worn over jeans or trousers or as a full-length skirt. Balenciaga was the first major brand to mock Ikea. They repeated the image from the famous fashion house, but reminded that their towels were several times cheaper.
But then Internet users literally “uncovered” something amazing. The account of artist and designer Freddie Smithson published a post with a quote from the 1990 comedy series “Mr. Bean” in which the main character tries on a towel in the same way. It looks like we now know what inspired Demna Gvasalia to create this skirt. Everything new is old and well forgotten!
