Former First Lady Rosalynn Carter has been admitted to hospice care, according to her grandson.
“She and President Carter are spending time together and with their families,” Jason Carter said in a statement. “The Carter family continues to request privacy and remains grateful for the love and support.”
The Carter Center announced in May that the former first lady was suffering from dementia. Rosalynn Carter, 96, has long been an advocate for mental health, including during her tenure in the White House from 1977 to 1981. She is the founder of the Rosalynn Carter Institute for Caregivers.
Former President Jimmy Carter (99) was admitted to hospice care at his home in February.
The Carters made a surprise public appearance in September when they drove an SUV during the Plains Peanut Festival.
The Carters celebrated their 77th wedding anniversary in July. They are the longest married presidential couple.
