IBM stops advertising on X/Twitter due to ad placement next to Nazi content; Elon Musk is under fire for amplifying anti-Semitic messages

Elon Musk is once again upset about one of his X/Twitter posts, this time agreeing with a user’s comment that Jews have a “hate for white people”.

The tweet drew even more attention to X/Twitter, which Musk owns, and its spread of anti-Semitic messages following the October 7 Hamas terror attack on Israel.

IBM announced it would stop advertising on the platform after a report from Media Matters found that major brands placed their ads next to posts promoting the Nazi party.

“IBM does not tolerate hate speech and discrimination and we have immediately stopped all advertising on X while we investigate this completely unacceptable situation,” a company spokesperson said in a statement to the Financial Times and other media outlets.

Media Matters included other posts with ads from Bravo, Oracle and Xfinity, as well as pro-Nazi and pro-Hitler content.

Linda Yaccarino, the CEO of and what everyone should agree on. Also in relation to this platform, X has made our efforts to combat anti-Semitism and discrimination very clear. There is no place for that anywhere in the world; it is ugly and wrong. Point.”

Yaccarino is trying to convince advertisers that X/Twitter is a safe place to post their spots. She wrote Tuesday: “We always work to protect public conversation.”

But Musk’s post on Wednesday reinforced a long-standing anti-Semitic accusation about the Great Replacement theory.

One user wrote: “Jewish communities have promoted exactly the kind of dialectical hatred of white people that they claim they want people to stop using against them. I don’t mind at all that the Western Jewish population comes to the disturbing realization that the hordes of minorities who support the flooding in their country don’t exactly like them. You want the truth told to your face, there it is.”

Musk’s response was, “You told the real truth.”

Jonathan Greenblatt, the CEO of the Anti-Defamation League, wrote of Musk’s message: “At a time when anti-Semitism is exploding in America and rising globally, it is undeniably dangerous and beneficial to use one’s influence to to validate anti-Semitic theories.”

Musk later tried to defend his position by writing: “The ADL unfairly attacks the majority of the West, even though the majority of the West supports the Jewish people and Israel.” Because based on their own principles they can attack the minority groups, “Don’t criticize those who represent their greatest threat.” Musk previously threatened to file a lawsuit against ADL.

Musk was scheduled to speak at a session on AI at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit today, but was replaced by John Kerry. Organizers said a scheduling change prevented his participation and they declined his offer to speak remotely.

The Center for Combating Digital Hate reported in an audit study released this week that after a week, X/Twitter failed to remove 196 of the 200 posts it reported to the platform’s moderators for the violation of its terms of service. The content included messages threatening violence against Muslims, Palestinians and Jews, as well as messages that were outright anti-Semitic and anti-Muslim. .
