Women are the first to be affected by the increase in poverty in France, according to Secours catholique

Female precariousness is on the increase, warns the association which published its annual report on Tuesday 14 November.

Poverty is worsening in France and it is women and children who pay the highest price, warns the Secours catholique in its annual report published on Tuesday 14 November. The average income of the people welcomed by the association was established at 538 euros per month in 2022, after the analysis of data from 49,250 forms filled out by its beneficiaries.

18 euros per day to meet household needs

It is therefore, as the report specifies, a daily budget of 18 euros to meet all the family’s needs. This amount corresponds to less than half the poverty threshold, estimated by the association at 1,211 euros that year. If inflation is taken into account, which mainly affects food and energy prices, this represents a drop in income of 7.6%.

“The poorest are hit by inflation, the noose is tightening, the deprivations are greater on things that are not necessarily visible, such as heating or food”deciphers Adelaïde Bertrand, general delegate of the Secours catholique, for our colleagues at AFP. To fight poverty, the association recommends in particular to index social minimums to the minimum wage, to extend the RSA and to fight against the non-use of social benefits by making social services more accessible.

57.5% of the people welcomed by the association are women

In its report, Secours catholique explains that it welcomed one million people to France last year, who benefited from various services, such as food aid or social support. Among these people, single-adult families are overrepresented (75%). These are mainly single mothers (25.7%) and single women (20.9%).

Many of them turned to the association following a separation or divorce. According to the report, women “suffer the brunt of marital breakups more” AND “taking on, too often alone, the responsibility for children “. Female precariousness has increased steadily in recent decades, while poverty affected both men and women until the early 2000s, the association notes. Women today represent 57.5% of the people encountered by Secours Catholique, compared to 52.6% in 1999.
