A family adventure film about a dyslexic London schoolboy who is sent to live with his grandmother in Scotland has topped the annual Brit list for best unsigned TV and film projects.
Great grandmotherby Keri Collins and with London producer Brock Media achieved 22 recommendations, four more than the second place project Body Horror Love Story by Henry Blake and Xiao Tang The golden glow of a beetle. Collins’ film plot follows a boy who is sent to his boring, grumpy grandmother’s house in Scotland for Christmas, only to discover that she has secret superpowers and a spy base under Loch Ness. He took an epic adventure in their flying ’80s Mini to fight an arrogant tech bro who wants to instantly cause climate change for profit.
Thirteen projects were selected for the Brit List this year, with the number of recommendations increased to twelve to secure a place. There is near parity between male and female writers, and nearly a third of writers come from historically underrepresented voices.
The top three, which also includes the psychological thriller by Maja Bodenstein The training dummy, are all features. Brit List founder and director Alexandra said she hoped “this is a renaissance for British cinema”.
The next ten projects include TV projects from BBC Studios Drama, Happy Prince and 5 Acts Productions. Five of the projects do not yet have a production company, but all come from writers with representation.
Recommendations come from UK production companies, talent agencies, distributors, financiers, distributors and broadcasters, with the results providing an overview of industry taste.
