Dominic West has spoken about his portrayal of Prince Charles in season 6 of the show The crown shows the current British monarch in the “worst time” of his life.
Upcoming episodes will feature Prince Charles following the news of Princess Diana’s death in August 1997. Charles and Diana had separated the year before, after which Charles cemented his relationship with Camilla Parker-Bowles and Diana began a relationship with Dodi Fayed, who also died in the accident that ended her life in Paris.
“There have been some really tough scenes and a lot of tears for Charles this season,” West said. “There are many scenes where Charles is trying to get over himself [Diana’s death] and breaking the news to his sons, trying to help his sons grieve, and having varying degrees of success,” West said during a Netflix cast interview the streamer previously conducted the start of the sixth season on November 16. The interview took place in April, before the SAG-AFTRA strike began.
West, who also starred The cable And The affair and has been playing the current King Charles III since season 5 The crownadded that as a father of two sons who were the same age as Princes William and Harry at the time of Diana’s death, he naturally “wants to combat Charles’ situation.”
“I always try to put him in a good light and I don’t always succeed, but I think William makes it very difficult for him in the second half of the season and he is very angry with him. and doesn’t want to talk to him and [Charles] I can’t get through to him, to his son, I can understand how it feels,” he said.
The series will inevitably make headlines over Charles’ relationship with Harry, who stepped down as a working royal after marrying Meghan Markle and has since become highly critical of his family, according to the Netflix documentary. Harry and Meghan and his memoirs, Reservations.
In ReservationsHarry wrote that his father did not hug him when he told his son Diana’s death, although he did put his hand on his knee and tell him everything would be “okay”.
West said he considered Charles to be a “very emotional” person and portrayed him as such in intimate, private scenes, such as the one in which he tries to care for his two young sons after their mother’s death.
“Then Harry wrote his book and said he never hugged him or anything, so we had to change that. Now, I kind of assumed – guessed – that Charles is an emotional and quite outspoken man, despite the buttoned-down demeanor he clearly must have in public.
West revealed that the “first two-thirds” of season six will deal with the aftermath of Diana’s death, while the final third will transition to “happier” times when Charles and Camilla marry. After Charles ascended the throne when his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, died last year, Camilla was named queen.
The crown Season 6 starts next week with the first block of four episodes and four weeks later with the second block. The cast of the season remains the same as the previous one: West as Charles, Imelda Staunton as Queen Elizabeth II and Jonathan Pryce still plays her husband Prince Phillip. New faces include Ed McVey and Luther Ford as William and Harry, with Rufus Kampa and Fflyn Edwards playing the younger royal brothers.
