According to one study, 41% of women will experience domestic economic violence

An Ifop study for the newsletter “Les Glorieuses” analyzed the impact of economic violence on women in relationships, which according to the survey is often related to domestic violence.

Often unknown or underestimated, economic domestic violence exists. This is demonstrated by an Ifop study published on Tuesday 31 October, for the newsletter The Glorioustransmitted by franceinfo.

These are described as “ control, impoverishment or loss of income which can reach up to expropriation total means of financial autonomy for women. The data is alarming: 41% of women experience it at least once, or 4 out of 10.

Blocking of bank cards, opposition to opening an account

This violence includes several acts. Such as, for example, the expense controlmoney theft, blocking of bank cardsOR the opposition of the spouse to the fact that the wife has a personal bank account.

Among the 1,101 women interviewed, 16% of those interviewed, having already had a relationship at least once, declared having suffered one of these forms of violence from their partner.

Savings and debt can also be a source of economic violence. According to the study, 17% of women have experienced a situation where their partner incurs debt jointly without mentioning it, where she insists that the couple’s assets and investments be made in her name.

Economic violence and domestic violence are related

This violence would be all the more sustained if the woman earns less than her partner: if 14% of women who earn an income equivalent to that of their partner have suffered at least one economic violence, this figure jump to 27% for those who earn less.

The study also highlights that economic violence and domestic violence are related: 99% women victims of domestic economic violence have also suffered other forms of domestic violence at the same time.
