The associations fear a “social cleansing” of the streets of Paris in view of the 2024 Olympics

Paris 2024, the most inclusive Olympics in history? Not really, according to more than 60 associations who shared, in an open letter, their fears regarding exclusion” people in precarious situations […] before, during and after the matchX”.

On Monday 30 October, around sixty associations launched an awareness campaign to raise awareness among the population about ” social cleansing » of the streets of Paris preparing for the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Dpraise for the homeless, reductions in emergency accommodation places

In an open letter, addressed “to organizing committee, its president Tony Estanguet, the athletes and the Federations, sponsors and partners of the Games », ask the associations « guarantee continuity of care for people in precarious and marginalized situations, before, during and after the Games “.

According to this collective letter, promoted by Doctors of the World, sporting events of this magnitude present a “established risk of social cleansing of the streets”, with “removals of homeless people, reductions in emergency accommodation places, closures of reception points, distribution of food aid, etc. »

The associations ask for a policy that responds to the emergency

Faced with this risk, the associations ask the public authorities to turn themselves in “An ambitious policy equipped with resources that correspond to the Olympic values “. They want it too be integrated into decision-making processes by adhering to “City organizational and development committees in preparation for the 2024 Olympic Games”.

Added to these requests is the launch of an awareness campaign called “The other side of the coin “. She denounces “the exclusion of tens of thousands of people, while Paris 2024 boasts of being the most inclusive and exemplary Games in history”.

This open letter comes four days after the controversy over the 100 euro compensation offered by the government to students excluded from CROUS accommodation during the competition. The latter will in fact have to vacate their rooms in the months of July and August 2024, for the benefit of the volunteers and partners of the games present for the occasion, just like certain homeless people in Parisian social hotels.
