BBC buys Irish crime drama Kin

The BBC has picked up the Irish crime drama Family from the fifth season.

The RTÉ series, which aired in the US on AMC+, is the latest high-profile show to be picked up by the BBC buying team, following series such as AMC Interview with the Vampire. It is manufactured by joker Fund Source Studios and Man in the High Castle Outfit header photos.

Family Actor: Clare Dunne (Herself)Charlie Cox (daredevil)Aidan Gillen (Game of Thrones) and Ciaran Hinds (Game of Thrones). Gang wars ensue in Dublin. A boy is murdered and his family becomes embroiled in a gang war with an international cartel: a war that is impossible to win. The Kinsellas are a local crime family, while the Cunningham cartel is a massive global organization.

“Anchored by an outstanding cast, Family is a powerful and intense story about love, heartbreak, family and crime and its devastating consequences,” said Sue Deeks, head of program acquisition at the BBC.

According to season five, the season two finale was the most watched Irish program of the year so far outside of sports. It has already aired in the UK on AMC streamer Sundance Now.

Family was written and created by Peter McKenna (The Last Kingdom, Red Rock), who also serves as showrunner/executive producer. The series is produced by Bron’s David Davoli (The Defeated), Samantha Thomas (Jessica Jones, Daredevil), Steven Thibaut (Pieces of a Woman, Capone) and Aaron L. Gilbert (bomb, prankster, fences); Christian Baute of Headline Pictures (The Man in the High Castle, Funny Games), Laurence Lenica and Frank Calderon; and Ciaran Donnelly(Modified Carbon, Viking), who is also a co-creator.

Bron filed for bankruptcy earlier this year, citing the Covid-19 pandemic and two strikes in the US.
