The Vogue YouTube channel has posted an interview with Milla Jovovich about filming Luc Besson’s Fifth Element and the history of the iconic Leela costume.

Milla shared that she did not take the main role after her first audition with Vogue. A few months after that, the actress met the director in a hotel, it was then that she noticed her unusual vintage style and suggested that she try the role again.

During the audition, the director asked her to perform various unusual tasks, such as “dancing like you don’t know how your body works.”

When direct work on the film began, the famous French fashion designer Jean-Paul Gaultier was invited to create costumes. Milla said the hardest part was coming up with Leela in the “nativity” scene. The actress suggested dressing the heroine in a hospital gown – from this thought the idea with a bandage was born.

A separate topic for discussion was the hairstyle of the main character. The director and crew couldn’t decide which fire tone to dye their hair: blue, red or orange. Then Milla turned to her stylist friend and advised her to dye her hair fluorescent orange and dye her roots white. This is how Leela’s iconic hairstyle came about.
