The lack of screening tests for Down syndrome risks penalizing pregnant women

Due to disruptions in the supply of certain components, tests marketed by PerkinElmer are becoming less and less available.

A deficiency that risks (still) penalizing women. On Wednesday 13 September, the Medicines Agency (ANMS) announced that medical tests used to detect Down syndrome in pregnant women are experiencing difficulties in delivering one of their components, and this at the moment global level.

These tests, marketed by the Finnish group PerkinElmer, detect the risks of Down syndrome in the fetus during the first and second trimester of pregnancy.

While the ANSM assures that this potential shortage will not have direct consequences, the agency is already looking for an alternative. “We are monitoring the development of the situation as carefully as possible in order to reduce its potential impact”, the ANSM told Agence France Presse, which did not specify to what extent this shortage will affect Down syndrome screening in France.
