What is squalane, a miracle ingredient for boosting skin hydration?

Squalane, we hear a lot about it right now, but what are its benefits on the skin and above all how to use it? That’s all you need to know about it.

Very similar to a hydrolipidic film present on the skin to protect it, squalane has many beneficial properties for the skin reconstruction of the skin barrier. However, it is a somewhat mysterious ingredient that can come from a variety of sources. To see more clearly, we asked Prudvi Kaka, Scientific Director of DECIEM, a few questions.

What exactly is squalane?

Squalane can be of animal, vegetable or synthetic origin. If its animal version is not recommended (because it comes from shark evisceration – horrible, we guarantee it), its vegetable version (based on olive or sugar cane oil) or even synthetic, is becoming more democratic in France. Normally its origin is specified in the INCI list of the product but otherwise it is not “call the brand to confirm”recommends the INCI website (International nomenclature of cosmetic ingredients).

In terms of properties, you should know that it is excellent moisturizing agent considered a hydrocarbonwhich means it acts like an oil without having the texture. Among its greatest qualities? Targets effectively the signs of dryness and the fight against dehydration. But not only!

According to Prudvi Kaka:

“Squalane is a fantastic non-comedogenic emollient. Emollients are water-resistant compounds structurally similar to skin lipids. Due to its hydrophobic characteristics, squalane helps minimize excessive transepidermal water loss, leaving the skin smooth, supple and supple. »

But did you know that it can, too be used on the hair ? Yes why restores shine and reduces frizz for healthier looking hair. Because what is good for the face can also be good for the scalp, which also needs to maintain its level of hydration in the face of daily aggressions that can weaken it.

Is it recommended for some skin types and not recommended for others?

No. Squalane is suitable for everyone ! And this is really its greatest quality. The idea is to avoid water loss by fighting dehydration, a phenomenon that can affect all skin types. Because we remember you, dehydration is a skin condition and not a type.

Having trouble with rich, slightly oily textures (although squalane doesn’t leave a greasy film), there’s a solution: bet on hemi-squalane which is a lighter version of squalane and bearable for oily skin.

How to use squalane?

It depends on the individual needs of the skin. If you’re just looking to treat dryness, pure squalane is a great moisturizing option. It can also be used as a substitute for a moisturizer, for example after applying hyaluronic acid. You can also apply it at the end of the routine, just like you would with an oil.

If you’re looking to incorporate products into your routine that also address signs of aging, texture irregularities, and signs of congestion, you can pair them with retinol or even salicylic acid.

It can also be applied to clean, damp hair to reduce the appearance of frizz and achieve a soft and supple hair mass.

Why is squalane getting so much attention right now?

According to Prudvi Kaka, squalane has been used for a long time in the cosmetics industry an exceptional emollient which can be incorporated into various formulations. Adds :

“In the past, squalane derived from olive oil refining techniques was widely used in the cosmetics industry. Consumers are now placing greater emphasis on sustainability, and biotech-derived squalane — which comes from bacteria that use sugar as a feedstock rather than refining olive oil — provides a great opportunity to speak to brands.

Squalane derived from biotechnology requires far less time, water and energy to produce, making it a much more sustainable ingredient than that derived from traditional petroleum refining techniques. »

Well, you know all about this exceptional ingredient. But remember, if you get your hands on a product with squalane, make sure it’s not made with shark liver. First why it is inhumane but also because the synthetic and vegetable versions work very well…
