It is not because we have children that we have any rights. On TikTok, a woman shared a video in which she explains the situation she has just experienced, and which opens the debate: do the parents of children have privileges?
Refuses to change seats on an airplane
@Myconqueringthe user of the social network TikTok, author of the video, explains what happened when she was just back on the plane:
@myconquering Having only slept 90 minutes the night before and knowing I had to give a presentation to 500 people, I desperately needed to get some sleep, so I didn’t agree to switch seats. 🤷♀️ Before anyone came after me… the kids looked like they were around 11 and 15 years old. And mom was within arm’s reach of both of us from the center seat in the row behind us. Mom proceeded to moan for at least 15 minutes to the person next to her loud enough for me to hear. But the woman actually stood up for me – multiple times. She was so kind and I appreciated it so much because I felt so guilty. 🤦♀️ #airplaneseat#seatswitching#airplanekarens

Translation : “What would you do? I got on the plane and a woman was sitting in my seat. When I pointed this out to her, she said, ‘Oh, do you want to sit here? I figured we could switch since my kids are here.’ (showed me the two seats next to mine). I said, “If it’s a window seat, I’m happy to swap.” She pointed the line between us saying ‘mine is right there’ pointing to the center seat”.
User provides details in video description:
Having only slept 90 minutes the night before and knowing I had to give a presentation in front of 500 people, I was in desperate need of sleep, so I didn’t agree to switch seats.
Before someone chased me… the boys looked to be about 11 and 15 years old. And the mother was within reach of both of us from the center seat in the row behind us.
The mother continued to moan for at least 15 minutes to the person next to her, loud enough for me to hear. But the woman actually defended me, several times. She was so sweet and I appreciated it so much because I really felt guilty.
There are many comments that support the decision of the author of the video, especially since the children in question weren’t small and could very well have been separated from their mother, who was right behind, during the flight. More, it is possible, when booking a flight, to choose lateral seats, sometimes subject to an economic supplement. Expecting society to prioritize a mother of self-managed teenagers can be misunderstood, and rightly so.
This is not a favor requested by a mother of small children. Nor is it about denying help to a mother in need, it is simply about putting the needs of one person before another, under the pretext that she is a mother. No parent vs. child debate here, it’s just human decency. The author’s reaction @Myconquering she’s not selfish, as she may have been accused in the comments below her video, that’s normal. She just didn’t want to put her needs ahead of a stranger’s. Not to mention she had no problem with the idea of switching seats, he just wanted a seat by the window. Nothing gross there.
Mothers and parents in general don’t always have priority in the public space. Although, humanly speaking, it is important to help them, like helping any person in difficulty as much as possibleit is not right to make one’s comfort prevail over that of others, especially in this situation in which, by separating the mother and the children, he could have allowed the latter to take a nap and let your kids play Switch the entire flight. Everyone would be happy, so why ride on his tall horse? Etiquette applies to everyone.
