Since her appointment as artistic director of Dior women’s collections in 2017, Maria Grazia Chiuri loves to pay homage to women through her work. This time she is Frida Kahlo.

Because Maria Grazia Chiuri of Dior pays homage to Frida Kahlo
The first time the Italian designer saw an exhibition it was a retrospective of the Mexican artist in Rome. The painter’s ability to use her particular wardrobe to transcend her illness and her pain left a lasting impression on Maria Grazia Chiuri.

The special place chosen by Dior for its Cruise 2024 collection
The location chosen for this monumental fashion show also had a special meaning in relation to the life of Frida Kahlo. It was in fact the garden of the former Jesuit college of San Ildefonso where the painter studied. Several frescoes by her husband Diego Rivera adorn the building.

There are various references to Frida Kahlo’s work in this collection, such as the butterfly designs, her men’s suits or the famous pink ball gown illustrated in her Self-portrait on the border between Mexico and the United States (1932). Many silhouettes also evoked the clothes of the Escaramuzasthese Mexican rodeo riders in long skirts and sombreros.

The finale of the Dior Cruise 2024 fashion show against feminicides
For the finale, forty Mexican women paraded in white dresses embroidered with anatomical hearts and red messages such as ” Long live my life » signed by Mexican artist Elina Chauvet. The latter was inspired by the story of the Italian artist Pippa Bacca, who was killed during one of her performances.
Powerfully moving.

As told by Maria Grazia Chiuri al Figaroit would be through this telescoping of female artists to question feminicides, in a country where” twelve women die every day because of their gender “. On the soundtrack, we could then hear ” Canción sin miedo “, feminist anthem by singer Vivir Quintana:
“May the state, the sky, the streets tremble
Let the judges and bailiffs tremble
Today women take away our calm
They sowed fear in us, they grew wings
Every minute of every week
They steal our friends, they kill our sisters
They destroy their bodies, decimate them
Remember their names, please, Mr. President.[…]
We sing without fear, we ask for justice
We cry out for every disappearance
Let it ring out loud “we want to be alive! »
Let’s stop the feminicides”

In short, an event that was intended to be feminist, in total contrast to the way Dior supports Johnny Depp elsewhere… Enough to further fuel the gossip that sees everything Maria Grazia Chiuri does as feminism-washing for the house.
