According to the latest Ipsos barometer for the Donner des Elles à la santé association, sexism remains deeply rooted in the hospital environment and weighs heavily on the careers of female doctors.

When will there be a #MeTooHôpital? After reading the latest study carried out by Ipsos on behalf of the Donner des Elles à la santé association, the time has come.

Discrimination, inappropriate comments and behavior, sexual harassment… Conducted among 500 hospital doctors throughout France, it reveals that the world of health is not spared from sexism, which weighs on the trajectory of women evolving in this sector. crisis for several years.

Pervasive sexist culture

Thus, 82% of respondents have already felt discriminated against in their professional career because of their gender. A figure that is struggling to decrease (85% in 2022). 6 out of 10 doctors have even been refused a position of responsibility because they are women.

“He was told that the position requires that he has no family ties, that he has no children to look after, that the risk for a woman of becoming pregnant and being less available is too high, and therefore that it will not be for her but for a man”, explains the Hon France Inter Étienne Mercier, Opinion & Health Director of Ipsos.

In addition to the glass ceiling faced by women who wish to evolve in the hospital sector, it is all a misogynistic culture that the study highlights. 78% of the female doctors interviewed said they had been the victim of sexist behavior, while almost a third (30%) had already suffered inappropriate gestures with a sexual connotation or touched without their consent.

No support or sanctions

Few, however, have dared to denounce the perpetrators of these behaviors, for fear of the negative consequences on their careers or on the working climate. 36% of the women who spoke admitted that they had never told anyone about it. 3% reported this sexist behavior to their superiors, 27% to their colleagues and 36% told people outside the hospital about it.

And even when they speak, female doctors aren’t necessarily listened to or supported. 62% of those who denounced these sexist acts believe that their testimony has not changed the attitude of the people concerned and that, in 9 cases out of 10, the hierarchy has not taken any particular action.
