Austin Killips, first transgender athlete to win an international women’s competition

Racer Austin Killips has won the Tour de Gila, a cyclocross competition held in New Mexico. She is the first transgender woman to win a stage race. Next stop: the Olympics?

This is a big first. Monday 1st May, after five days of racing, Austin Killipsa 27-year-old transgender American racer won the Kasteelcross, a cyclo-cross race, at the Tour of Gila in New Mexico.

“Queen of the Mountains”

This is the first time a trans athlete has won an international competition. Austin Killips won the “queen of the mountains” polka dot jersey, best climber.

“This victory was possible thanks to the entire community and all the ties I’ve had the good fortune to build over the years thanks to the bike”reacted Austin Killips on his Instagram following his win. “Hug your friends, ride your bike and remember that a better world is possible”he concluded.

One of the few federations to allow transgender athletes to compete

Unlike many sports federations, the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) is theone of the few federations that allows transgender athletes to participate in their competitions. That said, they must demonstrate a testosterone level of less than 2.5 nmol/L and maintain it at this level throughout the period they wish to compete.

Second The Telegraphthanks to the results obtained at the Tour of Gila, Austin Killips could even compete at the next Olympics in Paris in 2024, if the federation maintains its policy of selecting transgender athletes.
