Almost all of us have coconut oil in our homes. Whether it’s for cooking, to nourish our hair or even to use it as a mouthwash… It’s a relatively accessible product that is easily found everywhere. Unfortunately, it suffers from a mixed reputation. While some swear by it, others find it occlusive, comedogenic, and too oily for their skin type. If it is not really recommended to use it on the face, as a care oil, e.gcould it still replace our traditional makeup remover? This is what we will see.
Coconut oil makeup remover: yes, but…
In coconut oil we find, in a very concentrated way, lauric acid. This saturated fatty acid it has very effective antibacterial properties which allow it to reduce inflammation and actively fight the proliferation of bacteria responsible, for example, for acne.
Another benefit not to disparage: Coconut oil removes makeup very effectively. Greasy, it manages to dissolve make-up, even waterproof and attracts lipophilic impurities to eliminate them during rinsing.
If equipped with its pulp, it can also perform a light mechanical exfoliation when applied to the epidermis.
Do these three advantages make it a good makeup remover? According to Dr. Carl Thornfeldt, interviewed by the magazine ByrdieThe answer is yes :
“Coconut oil is antibacterial, anti-yeast and also works as a great first aid cream. Thanks to its degreasing effect, it also works well as a make-up remover »
Excellent points for this easy to find and above all cheap oil. But is it recommended for everyone? The answer is sadly no.

Coconut oil: not recommended for some skin types?
If coconut oil is recommended for people with dry or sensitive skin, all skins are different. Unfortunately, it’s hard to know in advance whether yours will like coconut oil makeup remover or, conversely, hate it.
To find out, suggests Dr. Thornfeldt to gradually introduce it into your make-up removal routine. For example, once or twice a week to start. If your skin tolerates it, you can increase the pace. But one thing is certain: coconut oil is not used alone, it must be rinsed off.
How to use coconut oil?
Because coconut oil can, in some cases, cause skin reactions and clog pores, it’s important to handle it with care. But how ? In a context of double cleansing, it could bring all its benefits to the skin without leaving a greasy and occlusive film.
All you have to do is remove your makeup with coconut oil first, then rinse and cleanse your face by applying a cleansing product (gel, foam or milk) secondly.
This gesture, in addition to being recommended for removing the lipophilic and hydrophilic impurities present on the skin, will allow you to obtain a fresh, completely sebum-free epidermis. Then, you can safely give way to your usual skincare routine…
