The Red Brides Brigades, long familiar to spring Broadway audiences, are returning this year after a two-year absence due to the pandemic and the results have been encouraging: donations to Broadway, Off Broadway and Broadway Cares / Equity.
One musical in particular has surpassed itself: a man of musicWith Hugh Jackman and Sutton Foster, the single show record was $ 2,071,806 with post-show memorabilia auctions and autograph poster sales.
Before the pandemic, spring on Broadway meant the appearance on stage of members of the show asking the audience to throw money in bouquets of red flowers in the atrium. Traditionally, cast members have offered bouquets of flowers to donors, offering fast-moving lines with the ability to quickly say hello to the stars. This year, the constant threat of covid infection prevented direct interaction with the actors, so volunteers and Broadway Cares staff thanked the audience for their donations.
This year’s Broadway Cares Spring fundraising campaign ran for six weeks, from March 18 to May 1.
“Audiences and shows alike have welcomed the cautious and strategic return of the fully funded campaign this spring with great enthusiasm,” said Tom Viola, CEO of Broadway Cares. For six weeks, the products diligently joined the effort. In addition to the extraordinary acting support, we sincerely thank the owners and producers of the theater, especially the stage managers who led the effort behind the scenes and on all stages, behind the scenes and in front of the returnees’ home. The theater was very successful. Your efforts ensure that our grants can be launched this summer and reach hundreds of organizations across the country. “
