David Lindley dies: session star and multi-instrumentalist with Jackson Browne, Bob Dylan was 78

David Lindley, whose talents on stringed instruments made him a sought-after collaborator for Jackson Browne, Dolly Parton, Bob Dylan and others, has died aged 78. No reason was given, but Lindley was believed to have been suffering from a long illness.

Lindley’s skills on guitar, violin and other instruments earned him an early reputation for session work from the 1960s to the present day.

“The loss of David Lindley is great,” said singer Jason Isbell wrote on twitter. “Without his influence, my music would sound very different. I was very obsessed with his playing when I first heard it. The man was a giant.”

Graham Nash also posted. “One of the most talented musicians to ever exist,” Nash wrote. “David could play just about any instrument thrown at him with incredible versatility and expressiveness.”

Lindley was part of The Section, a group of regular session players who helped shape soft rock in the 1970s.

“I listened to a song and saw what worked. The song is the center of it all. If the song was about a friend of Jackson’s who died, something plays appropriate,” Lindley said Rolling stone in 2010. “You don’t play a Chuck Berry solo in the middle of ‘Song for Adam.’ A Chuck Berry solo is great, but not this.”

Lindley worked in Jackson Browne’s band for most of the 1980s. The favor was returned by Browne when he produced Lindley’s 1981 album. ElRayo X, create an FM hit single with a cover of “Mercury Blues”. They played live shows together until 2010.

In addition to his wok for others, Lindley had his own bands, including the Kleidoscope and El Rayo-X. In total he played on more than 50 records.

No information about survivors or memorial plans was initially available.
