Miscarriages: Towards better psychological care in France?

On Wednesday, March 1, the Social Affairs Committee of the National Assembly unanimously adopted a bill aimed at improving psychological support for women who have suffered a miscarriage. The text is to be debated in the National Assembly on March 8.

That’s 200,000 pregnancies every year. Spontaneous abortion, which corresponds to a spontaneous termination of pregnancy before the 22nd week of amenorrhea (about 5 months), is today a real taboo. However, one in ten women will be affected in her lifetime.

On Wednesday, March 1, the Social Affairs Committee of the National Assembly unanimously adopted a bill presented by MoDem deputy Sandrine Josso, which aims to promote psychological support for women victims of miscarriage. Adopted by the commission after the rewrite, the proposal will be studied by the National Assembly on March 8.

Better psychological support

The text of the proposal is based on a study published inAmerican journal of obstetrics and gynecology : after a miscarriage, “Nearly one in three women suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder, with symptoms of reliving, avoidance and neurovegetative hypervigilance that can last up to nine months for one in six people. 25% of the women interviewed would have moderate to severe anxiety symptoms and 10% of them would suffer from depression “.

As related Western FranceSandrine Josso hopes to allow” an important advance for the benefit of the mental health of women, too often and for too long underestimated after a miscarriage event “. This cure would be financed by the Health Insurance, thanks to “the increase in excise duties on tobacco [le droit d’accise est un impôt indirect perçu sur la consommation, parfois aussi le seul commerce de certains produits, en particulier le tabac, l’alcool et le pétrole et ses dérivés, ndlr] “. The MEP also calls for couples to be informed of the existence of this aid..

A legislative blind spot

It is not the first time that the law has attempted to take matters into their own hands. During Emmanuel Macron’s last five-year term, former Renaissance MP Paola Forteza introduced a similar bill, without winning. In particular, she called for the establishment of a special three-day leave for the women concerned and their partners. To this must be added a public information campaign and the establishment of a toll-free number.

To date, only technology and consultancy unions have signed an agreement allowing for the establishment of a ” miscarriage leave ” in February. In the event of miscarriage before 22 weeks, the affected parents can suspend for two days. Internationally, few countries have similar measures. Among them, New Zealand introduced paid miscarriage leave in March 2021.
