The pension reform has been approved by the Senate, but there is still a long way to go

On Tuesday 28 February, after many amendments, the pension reform was approved in the Senate committee, awaiting the debates in the hemicycle.

This is a new legislative phase for the more than controversial reform. This Tuesday, February 28, the Senate – whose senators are mostly right-wing – examined and approved the text of the pension reform in committee.

MPs added several amendments, notably one in favor of mothers. This would guarantee them a premium, thus increasing the pensions of those who have had a full career by 5%. Concretely, a mother who has contributed throughout her life to Smic would receive at least a pension of 720 euros, against 687 today.

While this first step is a victory for the government, there is still a long way to go before the text is adopted. The pension reform was certainly approved in the committee, but the text must now be discussed in the hemicycle, this time by all the senators, starting on Thursday 2 March.

Debates that will take place until March 14, in a context in which two thirds of French people (66%) do not want this reform, according to an Odoxa poll, in anticipation of the general and national strike on March 7, which will be followed by many sectors.
