Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, is launching a paid verification service that gives its users a blue tick.
“This week we’re launching Meta Verified – a subscription service that lets you verify your account with a government ID, receive a blue badge, get additional identity protection against accounts impersonating you, and get instant access to customer support “, Mark Zuckerberg broadcast on Instagram.
The bundled service for Instagram and Facebook starts at $11.99 per month and $14.99 as an in-app purchase on iOS, factoring in the 30% Apple charge for its service. Meta Verified will launch in Australia and New Zealand first, “more countries coming soon”.
Meta Verified is supported to accommodate social media creators and give them “greater protection against identity theft through proactive account monitoring for impersonators who can target individuals with growing online audiences.”
Another benefit of the service is “help when you need it, with access to a real person for common account issues.” The service also promises “increased visibility and reach with presence” in searches, comments and recommendations within the platform.
Meta says there are no changes to the legacy accounts with verified badges for now, adding that “long term we want to build a subscription offering that is valuable to everyone, including creators, businesses and our community at large.”
Meta Verified comes after Elon Musk made a similar move to give blue badges to users who subscribe to Twitter Blue. The difference between Meta and Twitter’s approach is that the latter does not use an ID to authenticate its users.
