Rodrigo Sorogoyen’s last photo, The beasts (If the best), dominated the main awards, taking home nine gongs on Saturday night, including Best Film and Best Director at the 37th edition of Spain’s Goya Awards.
The film debuted at Cannes last year and topped the Goya Award nominations with 17 nominations. The film’s story follows a middle-aged French couple who move to a small town in search of connection with nature. However, her presence incites two locals to open hostility and shocking violence.
The beasts also won in the categories for best screenplay, lead actor and supporting actor.

Winner Golden Bear by Carla Simon Alcarras had 11 nominations but got nothing.
In Other great victories, Alauda Ruiz de Azúa’s debut photo lullaby (Cinco lobitos) received three wins, including Best New Director, Lead Actress (Laia Costa) and Supporting Actress (Susi Sánchez). Oscar-nominated thriller directed by Santiago Mitre Argentina: 1985 won the award for the best Ibero-American film.
Juliette Binoche was the recipient of this year’s International Goya. The prize is awarded every year by the Spanish Film Academy in honor of personalities who “contribute to cinema as an art that unites cultures and viewers from around the world”.
Binoche accepted the award and said: “Thank you for this beautiful Goya, which is not for me, but for the fire that lives in me, but is not mine.”
Before leaving the stage, Binoche paid tribute to Spanish filmmaker Carlos Saura, who died at his home in Madrid on Friday aged 91. There were tributes to Saura throughout the show. Speaking about the filmmaker’s death, Fernando Méndez-Leite, president of the Spanish Academy, said: “His death deeply affected the entire film industry, as he was one of the brightest forces in Spanish culture.”
