Paco Rabanne, the Spanish-born designer best known for his 1960s metallic ensembles and space-age designs, has died aged 88 in Portsall, Brittany.
The icon, whose real name is Francisco Rabaneda y Cuervo, took the fashion world by storm in the 1960s with his futuristic look with his first collection made entirely of plastic.
He retired in 1999 and has rarely been seen in public since.
His death was confirmed by a spokesman for the Spanish group Puig, which runs the Paco Rabanne label, which he left two decades ago.

José Manuel Albesa, president of Puig’s fashion and beauty division, said: “Paco Rabanne made offenses magnetic. Who else can make fashionable Parisian women demand dresses made of plastic and metal?
“Who else but Paco Rabanne could introduce a fragrance called Calandre – the word means car grill, you know – and make it an icon of modern femininity?
“This radical, rebellious spirit distinguished him: There is only one Rabanne. With his passing, we are once again reminded of his enormous influence on contemporary fashion, a spirit that lives on in the house that bears his name.”
Marc Puig, chairman and chief executive officer of Puig, added: “He was a major figure in fashion, he was a bold, revolutionary and challenging vision conveyed through a unique aesthetic.
“He will continue to be a great inspiration to Puig’s fashion and fragrance teams, who constantly work together to express Mr. Paco Rabanne’s radically modern codes. I send my deepest condolences to his family and everyone who knew him.”
