George Santos says he will withdraw from commission work

Rep. George Santos (R-NY), who earned a national profile for lying about his background, told Republican colleagues he would step down from committee duties until the ethics issues are resolved.

Santos told lawmakers he would temporarily resign from the small business and science, space and technology committees, according to the AP.

Santos is perhaps the most famous House freshman, the source of national news attention, congressional reporters’ dowry and late-night comedy sketches and humor since it was revealed that he wildly embellished his resume after his election. Santos admitted to lying about his college education and work experience but refused to step down.

“My sins here brighten my CV. I’m sorry,” he told the New York Post in December.

But since then there has been a flurry of new revelations about his background, along with questions about the source of funding for his campaign. Democrats filed an ethics complaint.

Meanwhile, a new Newsday/Sienna College poll found that 78% of voters in his district want him to resign. According to the poll, that includes 89% of Democrats, 72% of Independents and others, and 71% of Republicans.

While other New York Republicans called on Santos to resign, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy did not. He dodged questions Face the nation On Sunday. House Republicans can afford to lose just four votes in the current Congress, split 222-213.
